Submitted for Conséntrico 06 with Alix Pauchet

Fall 2019

Submitted with Alix Pauchet for the Concéntrico 06 competition, ECHO TERRA offers a moment of respite to the visitors of Logroño’s International Festival of Architecture and Design. The competition proposed the creation of a temporary architectural intervention at Viña Lanciano at Bodegas LAN that reflects on the urban and natural environments of the city. The interventions are designed around 33 panels of Garnica plywood, a prominent wood product manufacturer in the region and across the world.

Echo Terra is an homage to humanity’s relationship to landscape. As a place-based structure, it offers visitors to Viña Lancianco shelter in the vast vineyard expanse—a place to sit and enjoy a rest, a glass of wine, or a moment of peace. The design is in direct relation to the form of the surrounding landscape, evoking the circumambient Sierra de Cantabria. It’s geometry is created by connecting the dominant mountain figures on the horizon surrounding Bodegas LAN. This creates a staccatoed canopy that establishes a visual and visceral connection between the vineyard and the land of oak, beech, and pine beyond.

Formally framing views of the mountains themselves truly connects the intimate and the expansive. Echo Terra becomes not only a means of holding the landscape in its form, but of beholding the landscape in its crafted effects.

While a center for rest and celebration, Echo Terra simultaneously hearkens to the transient nature of how we engage with land—particularly this land. The structure’s frame evokes path and procession, a reflection on the dualistic nature of the roads in this area as sites of everyday work as well as the Camino de Santiago.

The plywood sheets are segmented efficiently to create a pavilion that mimics the mountain silhouettes beyond. The design creates a simultaneous architectural reference to the landscape, a viewshed for the landscape, and a shelter within the landscape.
